Kids games - good for travelling or when they are just plain bored!!

We know what it's like to travel with children  -  we've played 'I spy' and 'count the red cars' on various trips around the country.

So check out these ideas for keeping the kids amused.  Hopefully, you won't be asked  "are we there yet?" quite so often!

Alphabet mindgame   needs at least 2 players. 

Each person needs a sheet of paper ruled into 6-8 columns. 

Choose headings for each column.  e.g.  boys name, girls name,food, animal, city, town, car, male movie star, female movie star, male singer, female singer, famous person,  etc.

Select a letter of the alphabet. This can be done at random, by a non-playing adult, or selected by the players taking turns.

Each player fills in the columns with their answer, which must begin with the letter chosen.

The first player to fill all columns then says 'stop'  and the scoring begins!

Unique answers score 10 points,  duplicated answers score 5 points, blank columns score no points. 

This game can be made more challenging by adding a more difficult column heading, such as

famous inventor, something found in space,  etc

Create a travel journal

Creating a travel journal is a wonderful activity that will not only keep your children occupied on a long trip, but will also give them a memento to keep.  All you need is a sketch pad and a box of crayons/markers/pencils for each child. Each day of the trip, or for each event during the day, have your child draw a picture of what they did, and write about it.   You can also paste in souvenirs such as ticket stubs and brochures.   For children too young to write, have them draw the picture and provide the caption for you to write in for them. Make sure their work is dated.    Looking back, years later, they will have priceless memories.
